Melanoma March supports life-changing melanoma research. In recent years, ground-breaking discoveries have tripled the life expectancy for advanced melanoma patients and while we’re moving closer to a cure, more research is needed to help the thousands of Australians diagnosed with melanoma each year.
By participating in one of our national Melanoma March events or by organising your own activity, challenge or event to Move for Melanoma, you can support our research and move us closer to a cure. March 2017, will you unite with Australia to help end melanoma? To find out more about this great cause goto https://www.facebook.com/events/1459533460730848/?ti=icl It's not long now before our first meeting of the Western Sydney Melanoma Support Group, this coming Tuesday, 7pm sharp at 11 Morello Terrace Caddens (Penrith Baptist Church).
It will be a good night getting to know each other, learning a bit, meeting the team and of course having a cuppa and a chat. There are some exciting things for 2017 on the drawing board to try and help our friends who are too far away to attend or who are physically unable to get to the meetings, so keep an eye out. Don't forget that this is your support group so if you have any ideas please, let us know. If you know of anyone who has been diagnosed with Melanoma let them know about the group, they will be made more than welcome. hope to see you soon. Merv I was watching a movie this week and towards the end of it there was a grave side scene :-( Here the minister was talking about the deceased person and then pointed out that the headstone had 2 dates on it. The first being the birth date, the second being the date that the person died and in between is a DASH. The minister continued on saying that the dates aren't so important but what we do with the DASH (the time between the 2 dates) is what counts. In my case after I got told about my cancer everything seemed to focus on that and the rest of life seemed to take a back seat. Well that has ended. Yes I still have to deal daily the the fact that I have cancer and that I don't know what the future holds for me but I can't let it consume everything, I still have a life to live, a loving family to enjoy, a community mens shed to go to and so much. So I'm gong to make the most of my DASH ........... what about you. If you have been diagnosed with Melanoma or are a family member/career and feel that you need to talk about what's happening in your life, why not come along to one of our meetings on the first Tuesday of the month at 11 Morello Terrace Caddens, drop us a message on [email protected] or call us on 0431699665 or 0280114703. Don't forget that "......you're not on your own" The Western Sydney Melanoma Support Group will be holding their first support meeting November 1st starting 7pm at 11 Morello Terrace Caddens (Penrith Baptist Church). It is open to all people diagnosed with Melanoma, their family and support people. The evening will be informal and ending with supper. Information about Melanoma and some of the services available will be available. Come along and be a part of a group that encourages each other, and one that make you feel that 'you're not one your own'.
This is a FREE EVENT After trying to locate a local Melanoma support group near Penrith with no success,it was decided that this was something that was need for our community, so Kyle and Merv, two men with stage 4 Melanoma, with the help of their wives Ellen and Robyn, formed the Western Sydney Melanoma Support Group based in Penrith. Meetings are on the first Tuesday of the month 7:00pm - 9:30pm at the Penrith Baptist Church 11 Morello Terrace Caddens. Our first meeting will be held on Tuesday November 1st 2016 7pm-9:30pm. Western Sydney Melanoma Support Group .... you're not on your own. Update Firstly I wish to thank everyone for their support to Team Adlington whether by messages or donations. So far we have raised $2140 for the Lung Foundation Australia what a great effort by you all. It was a great day especially having my family around me. I couldn’t get over the number for people that were at the event (33000+) and the great atmosphere. Serious runners mixed with the not so serious but everyone was there to have a great time and to help out their favorite charity. We set off around 9am and it wasn’t too soon after that my worst fear was realised ….. I was overtaken by a pram. Across the bridge and approaching the Cahill Expressway Team Adlington was immortalized in the underpass exhaust covered wall. On to the Cahill Express way and we were greeted with a fantastic view of Circular Quay and the Opera house. Almost home and I must admit I was starting to struggle with my breathing and a bit of disorientation but no sooner had I started to slow down my family were there giving me moral support and Jess provided me with some miracle water. A minute or so later everything was better and we headed for the finish. We crossed the finish line in 59:36, no record breaking time but we did it and what was more special for me was that we did it as a family. Thanks to everyone again for your support . My name is Merv Adlington and I’m the Acting Chairman of the Penrith Community Men’s Shed. In March this year I was diagnosed with a suspect mole on my left shoulder which I had surgically removed. 2 weeks later I was informed that it was a stage 4 advanced Melanoma cancer. After hearing the word cancer I didn’t hear too much more. Another couple of weeks later I saw my Medical Oncologist who informed me that it had traveled to my lungs, was inoperative and finished his statement with the word TERMINAL, 1-3 years.
A lot has happened since that visit including having the cancer spread to my liver and most recently to my brain. The outlook seems rather bleak and very uncertain for not only me but my family. I have a wonderful loving wife and family who are dealing with the disease alongside of me and who without their love, support and encouragement I don’t know where I would be at this moment. The title of this post says “Cancer, it affects us all” and truer words couldn’t be said. It affects the person with the disease as well as family, friends and mates around them. Shock, tears, confusion, disbelief, anger, emotions going wild, times of wanting to just be alone and try to forget about it, planning for the future and so much more…….. and this goes on every day, all day. When I come into a room with family or friends and the conversation stops or people don’t talk to you because they don’t know what to say, your family conversations center around the cancer, treatments and future plans and not what has been going on that day with the family, these are some of the ways that cancer affects us ALL. I’m so fortunate as I have already said to have a fantastic family, church family, and my mates at the Penrith Community Mens’ Shed who make things bearable. So what can we do about this? At present there is no cure for my illness but that doesn’t mean that the future is without hope for future sufferers of cancer. Doctors around the world are working tirelessly searching for a cure and who knows, it could be just around the corner. But what about NOW. For a cure to be found money is needed for research and trials and this is where YOU can help 1000’s of people who just like me have a very uncertain future. On Sunday September 18th 2016 Team Adlington ( my family, friends and I ) are participating in the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival 2016 to help raise much needed funds for the Lung Foundation Australia. You can make a donation by clicking on the below link, send us an email of encouragement or come on in and cheer us on to the end at the Opera House stairs. If we all do a little bit, together we can change lives. https://bsrf2016.gofundraise.com.au/page/ScottAdlington |
